Youth Weightlifting Program

The NSWA is offering a 4 week program through the month of November designed to introduce young athletes (ages 8-14) to the sport of Olympic Weightlifting. With the help of our partners, Blended Athletics and CrossFit Ironstone, participants will be offered 2 one-hour classes per week where they will become familiar with the fundamental concepts of the competition lifts (Snatch and Clean & Jerk).

Contrary to popular belief, the sport of Olympic Weightlifting holds much more substance than just being able to lift heavy objects. The sport is reliant on physical attributes like agility, power, stability, and coordination and the ability of the athlete to improve these skills. During the early stages of training, athletes focus on drills that will improve spatial awareness, hand-eye coordination, and body control. Until athletes have mastered a fundamental skill set, they do not practise with heavy weights.

In this program, athletes will be instructed on correct movement patterns using a PVC pipe. As they become more comfortable with the lifts, they progress to age appropriate training equipment. They will also participate in drills that will increase their capacity in general physical awareness i.e. jumping, landing, throwing, pushing, pulling etc.
